Near & by far: 4 Great Photos in the News
This Dead Nettle Leaf Beetle isn’t the smallest of the top ten winners in the Small World Competition but his colours are his own (not always the case with photos taken through a microscope) about 25 different shots are stitched together for the bug to be in focus, the photographer explains on The Times slide show. source: environmentalgraffiti
The winners of the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2008 awards have just been announced, my favourite – Italian Stefano Unterthiner’s photo of a Sulawesi black-crested macaque winner in the Animal Portraits category. link: BBC
Gerard Maynard (of 13 Gigapixel photo of Harlem fame) took to the hills this year and came back with ‘The largest stitched-together panorama available’ – A 17-gigapixel image of Yosemite National Park, that’s 96.5 gigas! If your looking for something to do try and find the man that’s waving using the Zoomify When you get fed up go to the front page where the people are pointed out. link:Wired
After a month of silence Hubble is back up and responding again, this snapshot of two interacting galaxies was received a couple of days ago – Great come-back! link: Nasa Hubble site

Computational craft from Germany
Bumped into – Islands of Consciousness from serial Flasheur, Mario Klingemann, alias Quasimondo. Stream of associated images pulled from Flickr tags. Intermingling, distorted photos manipulated in real time by the random soundtrack. Collaboration between Klingemann’s Flickeur project and a musical piece called Islands by Oleg Marakov, a musician and composer from the Ukraine – Got mesmerized.
More mesmer – incubator: Kingemann’s ‘collection of computational craft‘
Blogs meet Comic Strips
Stripgenerator – from the Republic of Slovenia – is a flash based comic strip website that allows you to create you own cartoons with very little fuss, you can even start your own comic strip blog if you care to register (free). You don’t need no be able to draw – never easy with a mouse – as there are templates of characters and objects that you can drag&drop – very simple to use – short straight route between your ideas and your cartoon. Good idea worth developing.

I mentioned Queeky, another no fuss – start drawing – flash based site from Germany, in the last post, for its ability to replay drawings so you can see them being made step by step. Well, they seem to be attracting more people that can draw with a mouse, taking a look at their gallery. They’ve added 2 more functions also, you can now download the files in .svg format ready for editing and there’s a Micropaint module available for the Netvibes Start Page
