I’d like to share in some of the optimise shown by …?… (alarm:clock euro posts are never signed apparently) on the subject of Exalead the French Search Engine. I would. But I can’t.
The alarm:clock eu is a site that “profiles privately-held technology ventures. We analyze the business models and tell you how these companies fit in to the technology landscape“. Really?
Yesterday’s post by the anonymous foxy analyste states “We’ve noticed an uptick in search driven traffic from Exalead…..The French search engine is gaining some momentum it seems in its pitch to build a more consumer oriented search business”.
Neteco (fr), one of the sources cited in the alarm post, says “Exalead continues an increase in force (de monter en puissance) on the web by working on a new function: encyclopaedia search” (using Wikipedia results, aren’t wikipedia’s pages indexed anyway?).
First come the noise makers then land the stats. Statistics don’t speak French or English, they speak volumes. Le Barometer posted some stats last week generated by the unfortunately named French firm, Xiti. Other than underlining yet again, the massive Googlead: Exalead stands out from amongst the smaller search engines, as being the one that has taken the biggest dip over the last year, minus 14.29%.
Another post yesterday in the Atelier(fr) made the case for Exalead’s move into the future “search version web 2.0 finaly” after implementing “complicated algorithms” to help in discerning blogs from websites. Blimey.
Our man (or woman) on the alarm clock site noticed that among other things Exalead has in common with Google is “Its team does have a sense of irony : April Fool’s Day Logo”

April fools day in France is ‘Poisson (fish) d’avril’. I can’t help thinking, we don’t all see the same irony somehow.
Kind of sad really. I would have liked to post a positive one. Come on folks, send me some stuff about EU starts on the up. If you are part of an EU start-up however small, send some bumph so I can have a gander.
