France24 big in Japan

March 12th, 2007 · No Comments

france24.gifFrance24 - the round the clock TV & Internet news network touted as the “French CNN” - online since December has released figures claiming 3 million visits were made to their website during the last 3 weeks of 2006. Announcing the numbers, Alain de Pouzilhac, France 24’s chairman, said “I’m not happy with those figures, I’m over the moon.”
While commentators had jeered at relatively low financial backing compared to the CNN and BBC budgets, it seems France24 are quietly creating their own corner of international news media - on the cheap(er). In Japan, it is the number one international news site on the internet, according to Nielsen figures. In the U.K. and Germany, France 24 on the Web was third placed after CNN and BBC World, but ahead of Al Jazeera, while in the U.S. it was fourth placed. The News website is in French, English and Arabic.

“I think we are profiting from the credibility problems CNN has had because of the Iraq war,” De Pouzilhac opined. “People want to see how we report the news.”
