Flash Earth adds NASA satellites
Flash genius Paul Neave from the UK, has updated Flash Earth to include images from NASA’s OnEarth MODIS satellites, as well as : Ask.com, Yahoo! Maps & OpenLayers.org.
The NASA imagery is updated daily showing images of cloud formations from all over our planet so if you’re wondering whet the weather is going to be, have a look at your corner of the World with Flash Earth NASA Terra imagery.
Paul Neave – ” Unfortunately NASA’s website isn’t as nippy as Google’s, and the images are sometimes slow to download, so try at different times of the day if you can’t see owt” Something tells me Paul Neave is a fellow northerner, could be wrong, just got an inklin’
Other updates : a search box, a better interface and a more reactive zooming bar. Flash earth picks up from where you left off on your last visit and your can leave bookmarks.
“This started as a project to see if Google Maps could be made better using Flash – and it ended up exeeding my own expectations”
Mapping services incorperated into Flash Earth to date:
- Google Maps
- Microsoft VE (aerial)
- Microsoft VE (labels)
- Yahoo! Maps
- Ask.com (aerial)
- Ask.com (physical)
- OpenLayers
- NASA Terra (daily)
All of these mapping sevices are available individually , its just very practical having them on one interface , with the ability to switch from one to the other depending on how well a given area is covered.
Marvellous!

boy talk about viewing cyberspace….such techology.
We are raising up a new generation.

it really is much better than the google maps in it’s current form. full screen, more user friendly tools, you can use the mouse to zoom in like with google earth. it’s like google earth, but you don’t have to download it.
only problem is, it is possible that some computers need flash to use this flash earth.

Well..that’s true Brent
Although a large % of PCs already have flash on board, can’t remember the figures but it’s high, the fact that Flash is a propriatry format is the only (small) downside to this project, that I can see.

hey i just went and checked it out, and i thought it was awesome, but when i clicked the nasa one nothing showed up… am i do somthing wrong or is it broken?
April 9th, 2007 at 2:39 am
hello chad,
no, its not broken and you’re probably not doing anything wrong, sometimes you have to wait a while, as Paul Neave the bloke who developed Flash Earth puts it “the images (on NASA’s website) are sometimes slow to download, so try at different times of the day if you can’t see owt”

Hi,
This site is fantastic! I have been able to zoom in on areas I haven’t been to in years. I have also been able to zoom onto areas where my children live in another part of the country. Is there a certain time that photos or made and changed? I would gladly pay to use your site. Keep up the fantastic work!

hi Vanessa,
pleased you enjoy it, and I’m pleased you found it here!
Unfortunately it isn’t me that put Flash Earth together but Paul Neave who I’m sure would appreciate your kind words. This is a link to his site.
Thanks

Hi,
This is Vanessa again.I wanted to let Paul know just how great I think his site is. I live only in flying distance from my children and your site has allowed me to at least see the areas. It gives me a connection I lacked earlier. I am not very computer literate so I spent 3 hours last night trying to figure out how to use the site.I got stuck on an address and couldn’t leave! How often do the pictures change. Any directions you can give me would be great.I know you must be busy. Is it ok to tell other about your site?
Thanks again, Vanessa

Hi again Vanessa,
I’m not sure how often the pictures are updated, though the NASA images are recent satellite photos.
I’m very pleased Flash Earth has managed, in a small way, to lessen the distance between you and your loved ones. I can understand this, I live in France, a long way away from people I care about and the first thing I did when I came across Flash Earth was look at where they live.
Unfortunately, I can take no credit for Flash Earth, I have had nothing to do with it’s conception, and I do not know Paul Neave.
sorry
ps: I’m sure P.Neave would be pleased for you to tell others bout his work

when will the phots be updated as they are about 3 to 4 years old?
August 10th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Sorry I didn’t reply sooner billy, been away.
3 to 4 years old? which ones I wonder, all of them? Not the NASA ones?
I’ll have a look when I’ve got a minute, as far as I understood it was a kind of mashup that would be updated as and when each programme does, no?
August 11th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
Not sure how you’ve come to the conclusion that the photos are 3 to 4 years old Billy.
There was a post yesterday about Flash Earth by Adam Hirsch which addresses this subject, in it he compares the reactivity of each mapping service by observing a New Development Building at 215 East 96th Street, NYC

You have spelled “Incorporated” wrong. Minor fault but thought I might as well tell you! Pete
September 21st, 2007 at 1:47 pm
>Pete
Thank you kindly, good sir…shall be correcting that, so I shall, and make no mistake of it (just getting into the throw of things, for the Ireland v France rugby match today).
(as Phil Lynnot was known to say: “Has any of you woman in the audience got any Irish in them? Do any of you want a little more?”)
(a try to get incorporated ?)
cheers Pete
