Cucumis is a translation exchange service where translators can share their linguistic knowledge and help each oher online, earning points when they provide a service and spending them when using a colleague’s service. No money changes hands.

The translations are rated by “experts,” and translations by highly rated members cost more points. Apparently a member is promoted “expert” for a given language when he or she has completed many (little vague) translations which were rated with an average of over 7/10.

It is Paris based and was developed by Frenchman Jean-Philippe Sarda, who states on the home page -
“To use the Cucumis services, you must be a registered member. Cucumis will be useful to you only if you speak at least one foreign language.”

“Cucumis roughly translates as ‘Watermelon’ from Latin, a spherical fruit like the Earth, full of vitality and happiness. With about 3000 spoken languages over the world, we hope this website will help us to get to know each other.”

Back down to Earth and looking at the figures a moment, Cucumis does seem to be rowing in the right direction: 1,900 registered members at the begining of 2006 it now has 14,844 and counting. The site is little over a year old.
It is translated into 20 languages.
